From entering the gates to exiting them again, Miss Shen had only gotten her pulse examined. Aside from this, it was also just bearing the pain.

Stepping out of the Luo family gates, Shen Shu Han glanced at his daughter, “Your guts are rather big.”

Miss Shen uncontrollably shivered. Facing her own father, she was deathly afraid inside, no longer having the same courage from when she was kneeling in front of the Luo family gates.

Speaking of which, although Shen Shu Han was a military general, the upbringing and education he received since childhood, as well as his own thoughts and ideology, all were that of a typical Confucian scholar, paying particular attention to the differences between di and shu. He had many concubines, and also numerous children, but from beginning to end, he has always deeply respected his di wife and valued his di sons. Towards his shu sons, it was still a little better, but as for his shu daughters, they for the most part were completely disregarded. If his madam were to be a little more ruthless, not a single one of his shu daughters would survive. However, the Right Commander-in-Chief’s madam was rather open-minded, because she was very clear, towards her, Shen Shu Han only held respect and not love. In his heart was still that younger cousin that was his childhood sweetheart, the current Noble Consort, Su-shi. For the Shen family to wholeheartedly assist Rui Qinwang, how was there not this layer of reasoning inside. Her position was stable, but she didn’t have extravagant hopes towards romance and affection either. Towards the shu children, she may not like them, but she wasn’t harsh to them either. Using them to make marriage connections was rather a good use for them. A good marriage connection, for her sons, was also a great help.

“After returning, have this entire matter all explained clearly. If you’re a smart one, then you should know whether to tell the truth or lie.” Shen Shu Han’s tone was still the same as usual.

But precisely because it was like this, Miss Shen felt even more scared. She also didn’t think it would be like this in the end. She originally thought that it was just the Ding Duchess disliking and being displeased with her future daughter-in-law, wanting to make her lose face, and she herself would also be able to fulfill her own desires. That’s why, she came to the Luo Manor. Although she also considered the possibility of damaging the other Shen family young miss’s reputation, her father and them would always think of a way to remedy it. But, the Ding Duchess completely turned face and refused to acknowledge her. Moreover, she was further shocked at Gentleman Lin’s infatuation towards Luo third miss, and also the Luo family’s love towards their own miss, these were all things she never could’ve imagined. Even for someone like Gentleman Lin, they would just withdraw the engagement just like that?

In the Luo family rear court right now, it was strangely quiet. The two masters with the highest positions were both in an extremely angered state. The servants naturally didn’t dare to make careless remarks. If heard, they’ll definitely suffer at this time.

Speaking of which, today was Luo Jing Qiang’s first return to her maiden home. This originally was supposed to be a happy occasion, but unexpectedly turned out like this.

In reality, quite a few people even suspected, the other party probably specially picked such a day to come looking for them.

When Jing Wan and Sun Yi Jia heard everything, Jing Wan didn’t think much of it, but Sun Yi Jia, instead, began uncontrollably shedding tears again.

Jing Wan hurriedly used a brocade handkerchief to wipe her tears, “Don’t cry, don’t cry, I didn’t even cry, what are you crying for?”

Sun Yi Jia reached out and hugged Jing Wan, crying endlessly.

Jing Wan freely allowed her to hug her as she lightly patted her back. She knew, the Ding Duchess’s actions have severely hurt Sun Yi Jia. After this time, afraid, she will have thoroughly lost all hope. And for the Ding Duchess to go this far, truthfully speaking, truly was beyond everyone’s expectations. Just what exactly was she thinking?

Sun Yi Jia finally stopped her tears with great difficulty, her eyes swollen and red, “Little sister Wan, don’t hate me, don’t disdain me. She has never considered for me, never cared about me.” From here on out, unless absolutely necessary, Sun Yi Jia decided she will never set foot in the Ding Duke Manor ever again, even going as far as to one-sidedly sever all relations with the Ding Duke Manor.

Who Sun Yi Jia was talking about, everyone was all well aware inside.

“I already said, you are you, she is she. Elder sister-in-law, you just need to properly live out your days with my third brother.”

Sun Yi Jia nodded her head. She was very clear. If this was any other family, she would’ve long been isolated and without help.

“Little sister Wan, my fifth brother isn’t that kind of person. That child definitely can’t be his. Moreover, there are people following by his side at all times, so how can he be schemed against that easily. Also, he’s very aware of his own situation, and towards his personal things, he’s always been very careful with. The people by his side also wouldn’t dare do something like stealing, but precisely as the saying goes, guarding day and night, one’s family…………” The following words, Sun Yi Jia was no longer able to say. How ironic, their own mother. When stepping on your future daughter-in-law’s face, did you not think of your own son’s face? Or did you really think your son, no matter how much face he loses, will forever be that fragrant steamed bun that everyone wants to fight over?

Jing Wan fell silent. That was their own mother, the person closest to them, the person that has always pampered and protected her son like pearl, like treasure, and as the son, no matter who he guards against, he still can’t guard against her, no? Never mind her just taking her son’s things behind his back, even if she were to ask him for it, he would at most just be baffled for a moment, asking her what for, and with just a random excuse, she’ll be able to have him brushed off. If she has previously never done anything before, would you be able to suspect her of having ulterior motives? Definitely no. No matter how smart, and no matter how vigilant of a person, one would all fall for her tricks. That’s why, this matter, Sun Yi Lin really was very innocent, getting miserably screwed over by his own mother.

“Little sister Wan, it’s not that I don’t want you to cancel the engagement, it’s better for you to have it cancelled, just I don’t want you to misunderstand my fifth brother. After all, towards you, he…………..Even if everyone in the world all misunderstands him, he all won’t care, but if you misunderstand him, he definitely will be in more pain than getting stabbed with a knife.” Fifth brother was already very pitiful. Sun Yi Jia didn’t want to sprinkle salt on his wounds, and this salt absolutely can’t be sprinkled by little sister Wan either. Otherwise, he really will be in so much pain that he’ll wish for death.

They were noble from birth, proud children of the heavens, but now, have fallen to this point, and everything was all brought about by the person that originally was supposed to love them the most. In this world, was there anything more ironic than this, anything more painful? She was fortunate, not only having not fallen into the mud, but even obtained happiness. But her fifth brother lacked that fortune. She really didn’t dare imagine, how her fifth brother will be in the future.

“I know.” Precisely the so called, ‘the onlooker sees more clearly than the people involved’. Jing Wan although was an involved party, but she wasn’t infatuated with Sun Yi Lin. That’s why, this entire matter, she was able to see very clearly.

Seeing Jing Wan calm and collected, Sun Yi Jia inwardly sighed. Fifth brother and her ultimately weren’t fated to be together.

The servants of the Ding Duke Manor first saw their fifth young master hastily returning with a strange red mark on his face. Then, when their madam returned, they saw her secretively return to her own courtyard, and each and every one of the servants that followed her all didn’t dare to breathe too loudly.

This trip to the Luo Manor, afraid, wasn’t that satisfactory. The people of the other branches all carried a ‘taking pleasure in another’s misfortune’ mentality. However, they all were very clear. Right now wasn’t the time to go watch a play. One misstep, and they’ll end up burning themselves.

The Ding Duchess changed out of her clothes and completely redressed herself, applying medicine to her face, then applying powder to cover it up. But because it was somewhat swollen, it still appeared very prominent. She hated to death inside, and further was unable to quell her melancholic anger.

Learning that Sun Yi Lin was in his own courtyard, then looking again to the purple bruises on her wrist, this was the good son she raised, a white-eyed wolf that extended his elbows outward. She angrily charged over.

But, unexpectedly, she was blocked outside the courtyard gates. The Ding Duchess who was burning in anger directly swung a slap over.

The servant boy guarding the gates was also depressed. This was practically an unreasonable disaster, but he also didn’t dare continue blocking.

Sun Yi Lin stood by the flower bush, dazedly lost in thought. He didn’t change his clothes, and further didn’t apply medicine on his face.

“You unfilial bastard, to actually dare let someone have me blocked outside. Have your wings finally hardened, daring to do something like this?!”

Sun Yi Lin simply didn’t even pay her any attention, let alone bowing to her and paying his respect.

The Ding Duchess’s chest moved up and down indefinitely. She really felt she was about to die from anger, “I’m talking to you, did you hear me. Look, look, look, what’s there to look at? Just thinking about these plants and flowers all day, I’ll have them all burned down with a torch.”

Sun Yi Lin finally gave her a glance, his eyes exceptionally cold. And a moment later, he finally opened his mouth, “If I don’t block you, then you’ll take my things again and give them to those women outside that appear out of nowhere.”

“What nonsense are you saying, what do you mean I took your thing………” Regarding this bit, the Ding Duchess couldn’t help feeling guilty again.

“Mother, do you take everyone for a fool? You think others all won’t be able to guess what you’ve done?”

“I haven’t done anything.” The Ding Duchess both anxiously and hastily denied.

“Heh……..” Sun Yi Lin laughed, laughing very mockingly, also carrying an indescribable bitterness, “Whether you did or not, you are the most clear inside. I still don’t understand, where exactly has Jing Wan invoked your hatred. For the sake of making her lose face, you can even acknowledge a bastard of unknown origins as your son’s child, not even hesitating to take my things to give to her as evidence. When you did these things, did you ever think of me? Now, the engagement will be canceled, she will never marry into the Ding Duke Manor, you are finally satisfied.”

  1. At least her mother helped get her a good dowry though it was mostly JW’s scheme.

At least, his mother saved his life countless time in his youth though it was from her own child she was shielding.

At least, their mother has an Empress for sister and a capable step mother so they have some backing though they will thoroughly be disgusted by her nonsense.

I honestly don’t understand how she managed to harm all of her children without even seeing it coming. Very good… I pity her though. Through this altercation, we finally saw how inferior she was in scheming. Her getting time and time again disrespected by the Shu children and stepfamily should have been clue enough to her abilities and oversights.

I do realize JW hasn’t been in the capital for long and she keeps getting involved in great scandals or events. I only think it’s going to play in her bad reputation for being some cursed woman which plays into ML plans… But maybe there is more to it since you went out of your way to point it out. I was a bit mad at SYJ for her to have to be consoled again by JW but whatever.

    1. Wait what step family? What stepmother?
Wait you mean the other branches? Those aren’t step-family those are her brother-in-law families, like her husband’s shu brothers. The Ding Duke is Sun Old Madam’s only son, but the previous Duke had multiple shu sons and they all still live in the Ding Duke Manor as the other branches. A concubine and shu children won’t classify as a separate branch.

      1. Yeah I said step-family but meant in-laws. In French we use them alternatively oops lol. Basically with how’s she’s struggled with control before, it’s not as surprising to realize that she’s got as much shortcomings as she’s been shown to have.

  2. Oh man… that hit me in the gut, and I’m an innocent bystander reading this. Ding Duchess was a serious dingbat on this move.

  3. Poor SYL๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
His bro tried to killed him, his father so ignorant & selfish, his mother is crazy & harm him

  4. Ding Duchess is a real pig of a teammate. Poor Empress. Her son’s a complete easily fooled idiot and her sister-in-law doesnt care about anything but her own feelings and benefit.

  5. These two, SYL and SYJ, have really suffered. Having a mother who is just so incompetent that she does things that ruin her kids lives. And then when they get angry at her for it, she gets angry that they are angry. Then she pins the blame on anyone and everyone else, basically saying they donโ€™t love her and care about outsiders more than her.

I wonder if sheโ€™ll ever learn and grow up. Because, even if others like Sun Old Madame or the Empress were to admonish her for her behavior, she still wouldnโ€™t understand. She would just continue blaming others. Like when people reproached her for sending a big dowry to the Luo Manor.

I honestly feel like the best karma for her would be to finally understand what she has done to her own kids but only after itโ€™s too late to ask for forgiveness. But who knows, even then sheโ€™s probably still blame others.

Thanks for the update, Jen! ๐Ÿ˜˜

    1. The Ding Duchess has her ups and downs depending on situation, like before Sun Yi Jia married, the Ding Duchess was very protective of her lashing out at anyone that dares to harm her daughter like a mother bear, but then there’s her situation with Sun Yi Lin, sighhssss………………….

  6. I just feel really really sad… For Yi Jia and for SYL, the fact that the Ding Duchess doesn’t comprehend, or rather is unwilling to comprehend and admit, makes it even sadder. Because you can’t do anything and can’t change anything because that’s the kind of mother you have, you just stand there and be helpless. I think more or less people can relate to this when they are born in and live with a toxic environment/family/culture that they can’t escape from. Yi Jia was fortunate, really fortunate, but SYL… I hope he leaves the family. Who knows. Hopefully we can see Ding Duchess grow, but that’s a low probability. Too sad ๐Ÿ˜”

    Thanks for the chapter!

  7. thank you jen, for the chapter! Not gonna flatter you, i really like your analysis of the story at the end. All the parts that I rather didn’t understand, the hints I’d ignored and other stuff etc etc, all summarized in the end, it’s very enjoyable.
Back when I started this, I hesitated cuz of the older ML tag, but know, the story’s way too addicting and I hope you never drop it!
Do you have any other translations completed, dropped or ongoing?

    1. You can check all my projects by click on the translation projects up top, though all of them are very different from this one.

      1. ๐Ÿ˜ฒOooh! A PCFO update!๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€ Thank you so very much, Jen!๐Ÿ’– I’d almost given hope on PCFO.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks for this TWBW update, too. Pity SYJ and SYL, though, having such a mother.๐Ÿ˜•

        1. Iโ€™m very reluctant to work on it but I have to finish translating it ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
