As Expected of Siblings (1)

Sun Yi Lin and Jing Wan suddenly cancelling their engagement, truthfully speaking, made a lot of people all feel baffled. Even if that Shen family daughter went to the Luo Manor to make noise previously, wasn’t this all just a ‘misunderstanding’? This hastily cancelling the engagement, afraid, right now, they’re regretting to death. However, didn’t this also mean that the Luo third miss is an extremely narrow-minded person? This easily jealous and intolerable of others, which family’s mother-in-law would like.

And at the same time, “Speaking of which, this Luo third miss not only is easily jealous, but also has the suspicion of cursing husbands, with two fiancees front to back, the engagement time also that short, afraid no one can compare to her.”

Truthfully speaking, previously, Jing Wan’s limelight was too bright, having more than half of the noble daughters of the capital suppressed too miserably. Moreover, there were too many people that admired Sun Yi Lin, yet in the end, let someone like her who didn’t have that high of a status pick up such a benefit. It can be said to be new hate added onto old grudges, and now that this marriage has broken off, they naturally were taking pleasure at another’s misfortune. In addition to various assumptions and guesses, these assumptions and guesses, once said out loud, on top of everyone following what everyone says, then adding in some fuel from people with ulterior motives, it naturally just formed into a cloud of lies and slander. Moreover, there was a high chance of it spinning out of control.

As for those that knew the real reason why the two cancelled the engagement, don’t know for what reason, all didn’t come out to help Jing Wan say something. Actually, Yuan Qiao Qiao and Zhou Ying Shuang were both unbearably angry, but aside from being able to retort ‘Jing Wan isn’t that kind of person’, there was nothing else they could do.

Originally, according to Jing Wan’s special status, even if she broke her second engagement, it was still perfect for certain people to get what they want, and should’ve returned to being that ‘fragrant steamed bun’ again. But once these rumors came out, they needed to reconsider for a moment.

As a result, Sun Yi Lin didn’t get pushed out into the waves, instead letting Jing Wan sink into quite a predicament.

Sun Yi Lin somewhat regretted. As expected, he shouldn’t have cancelled the engagement this soon. He rather wanted to help, but how should he help? There was already no relations between them. He simply didn’t have any right to get involved. Moreover, perhaps because of him, it would instead make matters even worse. His mother has repeatedly called Jing Wan a vixen, so it was hard to say that others won’t think this, and that for Jing Wan’s reputation was amply detrimental. Thus, he could only fret on one side, while remaining silent on the other.

And precisely under this sort of situation, Sun Yi Lin inadvertently encountered Chen Zheng Min.

Having not met for a period of time, Chen Zheng Min actually appeared increasingly steady and composed. At this time, looking to one another, probably aside from having a bit of hard to describe complications, it was probably just mutual understanding. No matter what, they were once love rivals, and similarly people fallen to the edge of the world after all. They both tacitly wanted to invite the other for a drink.

They didn’t go to a restaurant, but rather just let someone buy the wine, finding a quiet place.

They both didn’t say anything, each downing three cups of wine first. Afterwards, they somewhat speechlessly faced one another.

Previously, when Jing Wan got engaged to Chen Zheng Min, Sun Yi Lin felt he’d gotten hindered by his affairs, taking a wrong step and missing the opportunity. However, the heavens took pity on him and gave him an opportunity, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to hold on to it. And Chen Zheng Min, after learning that Sun Yi Lin similarly admired Jing Wan, also said that he won’t give the other party a chance, but in the end, got slapped in the face by reality.

After downing a few more cups of wine, Chen Zheng Min finally opened his mouth first, “For what reason exactly did you and younger cousin Wan cancel the engagement?” To say it was like the rumors outside, he definitely didn’t believe. Never mind younger cousin, paternal great aunt and great uncle were both extremely wise and far-sighted people. How would they not be able to distinguish between black and white, not asking the right and wrong, and just rashly make the decision.

Sun Yi Lin held the wine cup and fell silent for a moment, “Because of one’s mother.”

Chen Zheng Min mockingly tugged the corner of his mouth, but then recalling his own grandfather, he seemingly didn’t have the qualifications to laugh at him. Even though he and younger cousin Wan’s engagement getting cancelled didn’t have anything to do with his grandfather, as the saying goes, ‘every family has its own problems’. Even if mishap didn’t occur here, it would still catch fire somewhere else. However, his situation perhaps was a little better than Sun Yi Lin’s. After all, in his family right now, for the most part, it was he that had the final say in everything, and didn’t have that many restrictions.

The two rambled on about this and that, and don’t know for what reason, ended up on the topic of Li Ru Yu. Although it didn’t become known to everyone, those that should know, for the most part, all knew. Cheng Junwang falling in rank, and Li Ru Yu losing her nobility, all weren’t trifling matters. Just, at present, there still weren’t any talks of her and Chen Zheng Min’s marriage. “You plan on just dragging it on like this?”

“What, you feel sorry for her? Then again, for better or worse, she schemed against me because of you.”

Sun Yi Lin furrowed his brows, “Pretend I didn’t ask.” The matters recently have been too much and too messy. He also haven’t seen paternal aunt for a period of time. He didn’t have any feelings towards Li Ru Yu, but with paternal aunt, he still had a bit of feelings. After all, since childhood, paternal aunt has always been good to him. Li Ru Yu’s life and death he didn’t care about, just pity the hearts of parents in the world. However, recalling his own mother, Sun Yi Lin resolutely downed another cup of wine.

However, as people who’ve both suffered a loss, even if frustrated, they still restrained themselves, and didn’t get drunk.

Meanwhile, at the Luo Manor, because of those rumors outside, the one that appeared to care the most was Sun Yi Jia. Towards Jing Wan, she always carried guilt, ashamed to face her, but seeing Jing Wan seemingly not caring all that much, she should at least restrain herself a little. Whenever something happens, it was always Jing Wan consoling her repeatedly, instead causing trouble for little sister Wan.

“Elder sister-in-law, lately, it’s not convenient for me to go out, so why don’t you let my third brother take you out for a walk.” Jing Wan suggested. Speaking of which, third sister-in-law has been more angry at this matter than her. It was better to go out for a walk and relax a little. Having that stuffy air bottled up inside wasn’t a good thing.

And her not going out, rather, wasn’t because she was afraid of others pointing and criticizing her, but purely because she didn’t want to hear those words, they were truly annoying. As for Ruan Fang Fei’s invitation and whatnot, that person wouldn’t go as far as to not be perceptive of this sort of thing. Perfect, it just so happens, Jing Wan really didn’t want to interact with her all that much either.

“Don’t want to go out, and besides, your third brother is also busy.”

“One day won’t make a difference.” Jing Wan looked to Sun Yi Jia’s taciturn face, “Could it be that elder sister-in-law is worried about others pointing fingers at my third brother because of this face of yours?”

Sun Yi Jia indeed didn’t care about whether her appearance was ruined or not, but she cared about Luo Jing Bo losing face because of her.

Jing Wan suddenly smiled, “Elder sister-in-law, how about I apply makeup for you?”

Sun Yi Jia was rather confused, why did she suddenly want to apply makeup for her? However, it was said that Hei Mei’s initial makeup was precisely drawn on by little sister Wan, appearing very much beautiful, with another kind of bearing. Sun Yi Jia suddenly became somewhat interested, curious as to what kind of makeup she will draw for her.

Jing Wan didn’t have Sun Yi Jia pulled back to her bedroom, but rather went to the study, or more precisely the art studio that was later partitioned out from the study for convenience sake. Afterwards, she let the servant girl go fetch makeup case.

Jing Wan studied Sun Yi Jia’s face, and then picked out a few colors from her numerous paint dye.

Anyone should all be able to tell what Jing Wan wanted to do. “Wan Wan, this is wanting to paint on my face?”

“In the past, never tried before, so it’s the perfect opportunity to practice on elder sister-in-law’s face.” Jing Wan smilingly said, even carrying a bit of obvious mischievousness. No matter how one looked at it, it was all somewhat concerning. “Don’t worry elder sister-in-law, these colors that I picked out are all harmless. I promise it won’t ruin your skin. Besides, if it doesn’t look good, you can just wash it off.”

Sun Yi Jia rather wasn’t that worried, but Jing Wan’s smile made her feel a bit chilly inside. Afterwards, she just resolutely lifted her head and closed her eyes.

Jing Wan went along the scar on Sun Yi Jia’s face, drawing a plum blossom winding around a branch, all the way from below her eye to the middle of her neck.

Because this was her first time drawing on the face, she spent quite a bit of time. But, the final result was pretty good.

Never mind the servants exclaiming in astonishment, even Sun Yi Jia, upon seeing herself in the mirror, was all in disbelief. The scar for the most part was covered up by the flower spray, and moreover, it followed along the lines, handled very beautifully. Without using the hand to touch, just by looking, one was completely unable to see the scar, and not only that, it also appeared very beautiful.

Jing Wan lifted Sun Yi Jia by the chin, looking over it in its entirety. Afterwards, on the other cheek, she drew a few floating petals. “Perfect.”

Sun Yi Jia was delighted, and the most happy was still those that served her. In their eyes, miss afraid will have to wear a veil out for her whole life, but unexpectedly, it was still possible for her to appear this radiant, even more beautiful than before marrying.

“Done, now go back and drag my third brother out for a stroll. In the future, if you want to draw again, that’s his business.”

Being teased by Jing Wan, Sun Yi Jia naturally didn’t comply, but Jing Wan forcibly had her driven out.

T/N: I’ll never understand salty pessimistic people, if you’re so negative towards this novel and the characters, it amazes me that you would choose to read this far, I should applaud your masochism for sitting through something you don’t like. And whatever weird narrative you’re trying to spin makes me think you read too many of those wannabe-saint mary-sue MC stories that you think that’s how real people are suppose to be like. It really surprises me how some people just can’t accept characters for having human flaws like a real human being.

It’s also funny how people are cherry-picking so much of what happens in the novel and ‘selectively choose to forget’ important details because it doesn’t fit their twisted narrative of ‘he’s toying with her life’, like the part about ML forcibly changing MC’s fate CAUSE SHE’S LITERALLY CURSED BY THE HEAVENS TO LIVE A MISERABLE AND TRAGIC LIFE.

  1. Really makes me think about the great Grandmaster Monk’s prediction of her fate. Like, it was some ten years of happiness followed by suffering? Also the ML’s past life’s suffering and second chance. I think author really put in ‘Everything has a price and consequences’ and ‘No pain no gain’ in this novel.
Or at least that’s all my airhead brain can come up with.

  2. Uh…I’ve been binge-reading and I haven’t stopped by to pay my respects to you translator sama, but I’m very sorry you had to encounter brain dead fools who are nitpicking the novel that you’re working so hard translating. I really appreciate all the time and effort you’ve put in not only to translate but also explain in generous footnotes and translator notes the flow of the story, key points to take note of, repeatedly sometimes because we readers do forget clues that have been foreshadowed. Thank you very much for everything.

  3. I’m really looking forward to Jing Wan next step – she’s happy, her family is supportive yet there are a few characters from the past that haven’t totally stepped out of the darkness. Thanks for the chapter!

  4. Right, JW was ‘cursed by the heavens’…it got me to thinking, could it be because she’s a transmigrated soul? Like her transmigration being against the law of nature, so the heavens gave her that kind of fate.

    1. I like this explanation of the heavens taking their ‘dues’ frombthe transmigrator. Lol Random headcanon adopted

Honestly, the only hard part I have with this novel is that I tend to forget hints and clues. So I tend to stockpile chapters. Lol Thanks for all of your hard work!

  5. Jen, the CEO-type novels always get past events recounted in one two or more paragraphs so reader remember what happened in their (usually) unimpressive novels with only cliche and cringey “”undying show of affection”” holding up their plot. That’s why they’re skimming and forgetting details. AND probably not even paying attention to reading. They’re probably here just to wait for JW&LHY marriage so when there’s no indication to that, they’ll skip.

I hoe you can just skip those comments next time, it’ll be really excruciating to dealt with those braindead.

    1. ( ´∀`) I’m desperately trying to protect my braincells from the brainded lol honestly I don’t even want to attract that crowd that are into that cliche cringey romance because this really isn’t the novel for that ;;;;v;;;;)

Sometimes from the comments I can tell what they are looking for or want from this novel, and I just want to hold up sign that says ‘this is not what you’re looking for, please turn back’

  6. I’ve got so many questions marks flying around my head because of the t/n but now I dunno where to start…
Because I myself just see the two main characters the female is a calm, realistic and (for that time) a very mature one, and the male as someone with fond and also painful memory of previous life who has this obsession (though I remember Jen’s note about that word that can’t really be translated as obsession since it has a deeper meaning) and tried (or actually strategize) to salvage the situation before the girl meets her tragic end. Which part to dislike, actually?

      1. Jen — I am among one of your devoted bunch of fans here who love your translation and absolutely cannot wait to read every single chapter you post. Just treat those nitpickers as carbon dioxide and they will soon disappear into thin air …

        1. ヾ(´∀`)ノ thank you for the support, I actually really love reading the comments you leave too

      2. Oh then it means they don’t learn their lesson; reading a novel, especially ancient china bg, please read with neutral, calm state of mind.
Jen, you didn’t have the obligation, and yet you still gave the readers reminders and translator notes to make us more easily understand the flow of the story or the style of the author.
What I often see (and after a while decided to ignore) in comment section of many novels with bg story of ancient china, are some (for me personally) annoying modern/progressive values those commenters wanted to force upon the ancient people. Can’t they see even the transmigrated character had difficulty living and tried to adapt in order to survive? Why am I even reminded by this now… Gomen.
But Jen, there will always be some dissatisfied readers out there because the characters didn’t do what they want.
For me, when it’s confusing, I choose just to follow the author and see if in the coming chapters there’ll be an answer to my questions. I’ve learned a lot not to immediately conclude something after a single chapter.
You’ve been doing a great job and this story is so good, you see us with wp account keep giving stars so, ganbatte! (Hehe, I have deactivated my wp for years and came back here just so I can read this from the app, ah).
I know it’s more difficult for you to ignore nitpicky readers, because you’re the translator who also communicate with readers, but hopefully you won’t be disheartened. 😊🤗

        1. σ(≧ε≦o) thank you love~
I actually rant to my friends a lot more, because sometimes it’s quite stressful to deal with comments on my own. I usually don’t like ranting out publicly, but sometimes it gets to a point where I just explode, especially when I see similar things repeated over and over again, like an annoying fly that needs to be swatted.

          1. Ayyy a warm hug to you!🤗🤗 the important thing is for you to remember all the readers who enjoy the novel, honestly if they dont like the novel, it doesnt suit their tastes, or its just not what theyre expecting, i dont understand why they keep reading so far… thanks for everything and dont let them stress you! Reward yourself with a relaxing warm bath from time to time 😘

  7. Oh man, I wish we could just move on from Sun Yi Jia now. She’s taking up so much screen time!

      1. I actually like reading the interactions between Sun Yi Jia and Jing Wan. That type of sisterly bond doesn’t appear much in c-novels, and if it does, it is usually done very superficially. Most of the time, I am eagerly waiting for the ML and FL interactions. But with this novel, I look forward to SYJ and JW’s interactions.

  8. While LHY does have everything grasped in his hand, he actually isn’t doing much more than give things slight nudges here and there. He uses his knowledge of events from his previous life and his understanding of the people involved, because you can bet he’s had all the players minutely investigated, to predict what they will do. And as shown with Duchess Ding, even he isn’t able to predict perfectly what’s going to happen.

It is true that LHY is forcibly changing Jing Wan’s fate so that he can marry her, but he’s going to make that up to her by doting on her and having only her for a life-time.

    1. If anything, he’s so much more positive than some MLs. He’s in the ‘doting, but scheming, puppy’ branch of CN MLs. They must have read too many domineering CEO novels if they’re even seeing LHY as one XD

      1. MC also gets nitpicked for being too ‘unfeeling’, because I guess familial love is nonexistent to horny teens. I now can understand why those pure saintly white lotus MC are so popular.

        1. I cannot not say something. Unfeeling? To protect her mother and best friend to THAT extent and she’s unfeeling? What is this dull pain on my chest ah? With what kind of heart those slanderer read? *weep

  9. Jen don’t be offended, can imagine your frustrations. They are everywhere on NU. My believe is , if u hate something that much, you shouldn’t go near it. You keep reading and yet nitpicking about every damn thing, how about stop reading then.. plus Its all Fictional..peeps needs to take a chill pill. Don’t piss off our translator.

  10. Don’t listen to the trolls, this novel is cuteeeeee~

And usually I don’t like yandere novels. Thanks for bringing this to us readers!

  11. I’m sorry you gotta deal with those folks, Jen. So far, it’s been a fun ride. I’m just enjoying whatever comes with no expectations.

  12. LHY’s plan going just as planned? Though, if it goes spiraling out of control beyond what he deems appropriate then im sure a few more people will find themselves suffering unfortunately.
