For a moment, Yu Lingxin thought that she’d heard wrong.
But, in the next moment, as she instinctively turned back, her eyes just started heating up.
The man was covered in wind and frost. His cheeks that weren’t originally considered plump to begin with were even slimmer now. Just, those gentle eyes were still the same as before, and the smile on his thin lips was further the exact same as in her dreams.
“Huijun.” Xun Che went forward in large strides, casually untying his cloak and tossing on the ground, and then reached out to embrace her, “I really missed you.”
Yu Lingxin leaned in his arms. That familiar and firm embrace even faintly carried a slight chill——He really just rushed back? Exactly how cold was it outside? And how come he didn’t ride the carriage? Has everything in the Chen province been taken care of? Does he know about her pregnancy? Has….has he been well?
For a moment, a bunch of random thoughts swarmed her mind all at once, but after converging in one place, in the end, there were only her tears that completely couldn’t be suppressed, “You’re back, you’re back……….”
“En. I promised you to return before the new year, so didn’t I precisely come back?” Xun Che stroked her back, also lowering his head to kiss her hair, “I know you’re happy, but don’t cry. As soon as you cry, I’ll also want to cry.”
Yu Lingxin couldn’t help but laugh while carrying tears, lifting her head to look at him, “Then, why don’t you just cry with me? Already a grown man, are you not embarrassed?”
Xun Che reached out to wipe away the tears on her face, deeply staring into his wife’s eyes, “Why can’t men cry? Do you know how much I missed you outside?”
“Probably like how I miss you that much?” Yu Lingxin affectionately snuggled against his palm, and at the same time, reached out to stroke his face, “You’ve lost a lot of weight.”
“Just a little.” Xun Che shook his head. Hearing Yu Lingxin’s voice filled with concern, the exhaustion all over seemingly wasn’t anything at all anymore. Pausing for a moment, he deliberated for a moment as he lowered his voice, “You’ve also gotten thinner, is it a certain disobedient little bastard giving you a hard time?”
“You actually know already?” Yu Lingxin blanked, and immediately after, actually felt strangely disappointed somewhat. She couldn’t help but pout, “Previously, I’d discussed with mother to not pass you the news, fearing that you’d get distracted in the Chen province. Moreover, I was also thinking…….” She somewhat disappointedly lowered her head, “I was also thinking to give you a surprise.”
Xun Che couldn’t help but laugh, his two arms gathering her into his embrace, “After the first time Little Chi went to examine, I immediately just knew. Even if I’m not in the capital, what is there in the capital that I don’t know about? Especially regarding you, how can I not know? Surprises and whatnot all aren’t important. Only when you’re safe and sound can I be at ease.”
His words although sounded pleasant, Yu Lingxin still felt a bit regretful, “But…..But, this kind of news, you actually didn’t hear from me. I still feel……..”
“Huijun? Really! You’re really pregnant!?” Xun Che suddenly let go of her, even retreating two steps, his face full of extremely sincere shock, as well as enormous joy, “This…….this…….”
“Enough!” Yu Lingxin finally laughed in spite of herself again, spitting at him, “This is too fake.”
Xun Che also found it funny himself, retracting his expression, returning to his usual gentle smile again, softly saying, “Not entirely. When I received little Chi’s message, I really was like this inside. Just, the Chen province’s state of affairs were like that. I truly was unable to fly back to the capital. Afterwards, hearing that you were anemic and overstressed, I just further felt sorry towards you. But, I really was very happy.”

Falling silent for a moment, he reached out to hold Yu Lingxin’s hand. As their four eyes met, his voice was increasingly light, “Huijun, we’re going to have a child. Our child. I’m really, very happy.”
His handsome eyes really turned red this time. Yu Lingxin’s nose also immediately went sour.
She knows. She knows that he really was happy.
A child, for the two of them in the last lifetime, really was something that they didn’t even dare to dream of, something that can’t even be mentioned.
“En.” Her throat was also choked with emotions, also unable to say anything more.
And at this time, Chen Qiao’s voice unexpectedly sounded from the outside. He was very nervous, but still hardened his head, “Second young master, please watch the time a little, we still need to………”
“I know.” Xun Che slightly raised his voice, and shortly after, also reached out to press his own nose, having the warmth in his eyes, and the saddness in his heart, all forcibly pressed down.
He kissed Yu Lingxin’s forehead, “Go rest first, I’ll quickly meet with his Highness and return a bit later. Don’t wait for me.”
Yu Lingxin finally came to realization. The Chen province’s matters probably still haven’t been resolved. In fact, it was very likely that Xun Che should’ve gone to look for Qin Wang first after returning to the capital, but he instead took a detour to return home first to see her.
“I understand. Just go, don’t worry about me.” She immediately nodded, personally tying the cloak on Xun Che, “Go early and come back early, be careful.”
Xun Che nodded, but didn’t say anything else, just reluctantly caressed her face. Shortly after, he turned around and swiftly went out, his travel-worn figure very quickly disappearing into the night.
At this time, Yu Lingxin finally relaxed half a breath. Although when he wasn’t in the capital, she was still confident in him, but Xun Che’s return still made her even more at ease.
At once, she ordered the servant girls to prepare warm water for washing up and bathing, also warming up porridge and hot tea on the stove, ready at anytime for Xun Che to use when he comes back in the night. Afterwards, she went to bed on her own first.
Since Xun Che returned in such a hurry, even needing to go see Qin Wang in the night, then it certainly will take a while. Her best course of action at this time was just taking baby Xun to rest early, so as to not let Xun Che worry.
And in reality, carrying this kind of thought, Yu Lingxin’s sleep was indeed very good tonight. Although very late into the night, Xun Che’s return to their room, she also vaguely sensed, she nevertheless didn’t really wake up, instead very naturally curling into that embrace that she has been longing for a long time, sleeping all the way until the next morning.
Just, when she got up, her side was actually empty again. Bai Guo immediately came in to report, “Young madam, the heir said that he needed to meet with the emperor, so left early in the morning. It was the heir that instructed us to add some calming herbs into your medicine yesterday, so as to let you rest more, needless to be busy in the morning, so……….”
She couldn’t help but lower her head and caress her abdomen that was currently still very flat, “Little guy, don’t be like your father too much.”
After the morning meal, Yu Lingxin still went to pay respect to Ming Huayue first as per usual, chatting a little with Ming Huayue and Xun Ying, even drinking half a cup of tea. Afterwards, they went over to Cide Hall together, going to sit a little with Xun old madam.
In the first few days when the old madam and the second branch just returned to the manor, this sit was even quite long. Mainly, it was because the people of the second branch needed to re-settle down again in the manor. Between the food and clothing expenses, the arrangement of the servants and such, there were always some miscellaneous matters. And at the time, including Xun old madam, everyone was all still somewhat cautious and even formal, unknown as to whether it was because the Jade Peak Villa’s fire really scared them, or just fearing that the strong-tempered Ming Huayue would change face at anytime, once again creating unforeseen changes.
But, after Qi Pei came over to visit Xun old madam, bringing along many gifts and bestowments from the palace and Wu Wang Manor, also giving this Li mama who practically had Zhaoyang Hall written in bright letters above her head, Xun old madam and the second branch’s attitude slightly became a bit tougher again. Although, they didn’t immediately cause trouble, just seemingly appearing to have a bit more confidence.
Ming Huayue understood, but was too lazy to care, so just brought along the children every day for a sit, like morning roll call. Sometimes, the tea didn’t even touch the lips. After asking if the old madam’s body was well, and if the second was fine, they would just directly leave.
However, today was somewhat different. Xun Che although returned to the manor late, it still wasn’t anything that needed to be kept a secret, so Xun old madam naturally knew too, thus directly asked Yu Lingxin, “Heard that Che boy has returned?”
“Yes.” Yu Lingxin slightly bowed in response.
Xun old madam dryly coughed, as if very not used to this kind of phrasing, but soon after, still asked if the journey was well, if his body was well, and such. Hearing this, Yu Lingxin didn’t really think much of it. These kinds of questions were very normal, so she just casually answered one by one.
But, Ming Huayue’s and Xun Ying’s eyes both somewhat flickered———-This was very unlike the usual Xun old madam. In the past, when has she ever cared for Xun Che?
Sure enough, Xun old madam’s words in the next moment made the people of the first branch understood immediately, “Speaking of which, in the past, I also very rarely ask about Che boy. It’s also seeing how eldest one’s wife has taken care of him well, everything all proper for that child. Looking at things now, Che boy has been married for half a year already, yet there’s only Che boy’s wife, you, alone in his room with no one helping out.”
Speaking to here, Xun old madam dryly coughed again, glancing at Yu Lingxin, “Of course, Che boy’s wife, you are very good, just your body isn’t good, inviting the imperial physician that many times. It’s still because there’s no one helping you. It just so happens that I have a pretty good servant girl here. Since you are a magnanimous child, then presumably you also have the capacity to tolerate others.”
Ming Huayue raised her brow and was just about to speak when Li mama suddenly added, “Old madam’s words are extremely right. Her Highness the Empress also often say this. As the main wife, the most important thing is just having the capacity to tolerate others, helping the husband’s family spread the leaves and branches, the sisters harmonious, the whole family prosperous.”
Yu Lingxin immediately smiled upon hearing, “Old madam is extremely right, and mama’s words are further reasonable. Just, I’m someone with high sights. Ordinary servant girls can’t just be randomly given to our family’s heir. Since Li mama has come from Zhaoyang Hall, might one trouble you to help out? Just have this extremely good servant girl taught according to her Highness the Empress’s rules for a few days before giving to me. This way, you, this noble personage, wouldn’t have come to our family for nothin. How about it?”

…I’m a little disappointed… old lady, is your only plan to shove a woman in? like do you really think the same man who set a fire in your bedroom wing, (I forget what it’s called) in retaliation bc you dared to scheme to embarrass his beloved so she wouldn’t marry into the family, would just meekly take a concubine? and visit said concubine? don’t tell me she doesn’t know why the fire was set. like the thing about concubines is the man has to visit them right? like if he doesn’t visit them at all what are you going to do? it’s such a bad plan… I’m also disappointed in the palace mama…. my expectations were low but I didn’t even think they’d be this low 😔
I think the old lady’s simple schemes come from inexperience. I don’t remember Grandfather Xu had siblings or what was the relationships of that gen, but old lady married under a princess to someone without concubines, that’s my assumption at least as there are no shu uncles and such.
To be honest I’m over tired of the second branch and the old lady, I hope the author is too at this point. I started this novel expecting a bit more intrigue and courtly drama, and there was some. But it’s been a bit we had any and I hope the coming chapters a bit more interesting.
