Powerfully Formidable

“What is she making a fuss for, which one of the brothers does she want to take responsibility?” Luo Old Madam didn’t even bat an eye.

Jing Wan coiled around Luo Old Madam’s arm, “In grandmother’s view, which one does second paternal aunt want to take responsibility?”

Luo Old Madam coldly snorted. She didn’t answer Jing Wan’s question, but it was obvious, she had an understanding inside.

Comparing Luo Jing Bo and Luo Jing Ming, the former was a di-born’s di son, having ‘invented’ a new style of painting. Right now, gongbi painting was slowly becoming widespread, getting liked by more and more people, so becoming a ‘great scholar for a generation’ seemingly was already certain. Although he has taken a wife, she was one with a ruined appearance, and moreover, her dowry was very ample. The latter was a shu-born’s shu son, his own father already paralyzed on the bed, and at present just attending the Imperial Academy with honors of a scholar. Comparatively speaking, his advantage should be having yet married?

There was a saying called, ‘rather a poor family’s wife than to be an emperor’s consort’.

But in reality, how many girls had this kind of willpower and perception?

Luo Jing Bo and Luo Jing Ming were far from having the disparity between an emperor and a poor peasant. Their greatest difference was nothing more than their fame, future prospect, and also wealth, but these were already enough. For many people, what they pursued all their life, wasn’t it just these?

There were still those that firmly believe Luo Jing Bo won’t like Sun Yi Jia. The general public all believe, as a girl, the face was everything. Ruining the face, that was just equal to destroying everything. And they similarly believed, men seemingly would only care about that face, how laughable.

The relevant people were already all gathered in the second branch’s main courtyard, Falling Plum Blossom Residence.

When Jing Wan and Luo Old Madam arrived, that second lady of the Luo family was currently arrogantly sitting in the main seat, as if she was the owner of this place, declaring to others her strong presence.

And as for the others, their complexion all weren’t that great either. Especially Luo Jing Ming, his hair was still wet, and if her memory was correct, his clothes should have also changed. His complexion was somewhat pale, yet his cheeks had an abnormal blush. From the looks of it, it was seemingly having consumed a certain kind of drug, and the effect have yet to disperse. Just don’t know if it was him getting splashed water, or him voluntarily jumping into the water.

Seeing Luo Old Madam, that one’s imposing manner finally weakened a little, somewhat unwillingly getting up together with the others to greet Luo Old Madam.

Luo Old Madam’s expression was indifferent, and after sitting down, “What exactly do you want to do?”

Luo second lady’s breathing slowed, as if suffering a great blow, “Mother, what do you mean by this, your outer granddaughter got bullied like this, yet you’re actually asking me what I want to do? What do I want to do, what can I do? I merely want to seek justice for that poor daughter of mine, that’s all.” Afterwards, she just clenched her teeth and forcibly endured, appearing extremely wronged.

“Seek justice? What justice do you want to seek?” Luo Old Madam said with a cold expression.

“Jing Bo injured her face, how will she marry in the future? Could it be it’ll just be swept under just like this?” Luo second lady’s voice carried a bit of sharpness.

Luo Jing Bo had a dark expression, and at this time, even wanted to disregard his status and beat someone up. Someone as carefree as him on normal days, even if maturing quite a bit after marrying, his inherent nature still carried a bit of ‘not bothering with trifles’ attitude. Being like this now, it can be seen, he was severely angered. However, in the end, he still endured it.

“Then why don’t you explain, how did Jing Bo just injure the person?”

When Luo Old Madam asked this, Luo second lady carried a look of resentment, suddenly looking towards Luo Jing Ming. That look was like as if wanting to eat him alive. “For this, will just have to ask this good nephew of mine, that heart this black, actually scheming against one’s own younger cousin. Ling Shan nearly got her purity ruined by him.”

Luo Jing Ming this while was currently feeling unwell. Probably because of his birth, among the eldest three brothers, he was the most introverted. However, as the saying goes, even people made of mud all still have earthly properties. He’d suffered such an absurd disaster, yet still got blamed, so this mood naturally won’t be good. He coldly glanced at this second paternal aunt.

“Is Jiang Ling Shan a divine beauty, or is your Jiang family of high position with heavy power worth him peeping at? Don’t stick gold onto your own face.”

In reality, don’t look at how Luo Jing Ming was just a shu son, his upbringing wasn’t lacking in the slightest. His future prospect perhaps was inferior to Luo Jing Bo’s, but as long as he steadily continues like this, his future definitely won’t be lacking.

In addition to the Luo family currently being in good favor, there were too many people that wanted to make marriage connections. However, for the children of the Luo family that weren’t of age, on the matter of marriage, it was directly turned down. Thus, Luo Jing Ming just became a delicious steamed bun. Him being a shu son, this bit, perhaps had a bit of influence, but he was the same as the other two brothers, getting personally instructed by Luo Pei Shan, so that bit of blemish simply wasn’t worth mentioning. Moreover, don’t forget about those who have casted themselves under Jin Qinwang in the dark. Their own daughters can’t enter Jin Qinwang Manor, so to want to have an even closer connection with him, naturally can only find ways in other areas. For the other princes it definitely won’t work, but your Jin Wangfei’s maiden family was definitely the optimal choice. As such, never mind Luo Jing Ming, even the ones behind him, not a single one needed to worry.

Luo Jing Ming’s marriage arrangements were long shifted ahead in the schedule, and right now, it was also for the most part locked on those few families, just handling the final filtering. Each and every one’s upbringing, talent, appearance, family background, and character all surpassed Jiang Ling Shan’s. How broken would his brain have to be to scheme against Jiang Ling Shan.

Luo Old Madam also unhesitantly had these pointed out one by one.

Luo second lady’s expression stiffened, and afterwards, her tears just streamed down, “Mother, I’m not your biological child, so as expected, you don’t like me. Never mind that my marriage wasn’t as good as eldest sister’s and third younger sister’s, now even Ling Shan…………”

“Enough, the children are still here, so I don’t want to have your face torn down.”

Luo second lady’s lips squirmed, yet didn’t dare to say anything.

Jing Wan felt baffled. This second paternal aunt although was a shu-born, she was raised by grandmother. All say between her and grandmother, it was no different than actual mother and daughter, and at Qi’an Fu, Jing Wan also heard a little from the people by grandmother’s side. It indeed wasn’t considered lacking. However, Jing Wan could roughly tell, it actually wasn’t particularly good either. At least, can’t compare with the other two paternal aunts. Grandmother’s character, Jing Wan still believed in, and after accepting, she probably won’t treat differently. Looking at it now, it wasn’t just ordinarily disliking. Should be that this second paternal aunt did something that angered grandmother, making grandmother hate her.

Actually, speaking of which, second paternal aunt’s in-law family, although were somewhat inferior to the other two sisters, second paternal uncle-in-law’s moral character was very good. That year, they were all people picked by Luo Pei Shan, and at the time, he was far from his position today.

“Don’t think that you’re the only ones that are smart, having everyone else treated as fools. With that bit of twist and turns in your hearts, you still dared to play around in front of me? If you’d wanted to let Jing Ming marry Jiang Ling Shan, I might have had a somewhat higher view of you. Nearly twenty years, yet you still refuse to change, raising your perfectly fine child into such a state. Take Jiang Ling Shan and immediately get lost from the Luo family. Just remember, today, even if she lost her purity, don’t even think about entering the Luo family gates.”

Luo second lady looked to Luo Old Madam in disbelief, “Mother, you actually, actually dare to be this heartless? Not distinguishing between right or wrong and just determining Ling Shan’s fault? How can you, how can you…………..”

Luo Old Madam just faintly looked to her, just like looking at a stranger.

Probably really having gotten ruthlessly stabbed by Luo Old Madam, her face crumbled, “Mother, Luo Rong Ping and I are both shu-born, even his shu-born son you all cup in the palm, yet my di-born daughter, you just humiliate as such…………”

“Right now, obediently get lost and the Luo family will still be your maiden family, otherwise…………….”

Luo second lady’s complexion was deathly pale, just like that blending palette, “You’re actually this heartless, this heartless………….alright, I’ll leave, I’ll leave……….” She wiped her tears, just like as if that heart was thoroughly broken, the heart turning to ashes.

Jing Wan sighed. As expected, each and every one were all oscars-level actors. Clearly she was scared of grandmother’s threat, afraid of really losing the Luo family, this big tree, yet acted like as if it was because of grandmother’s heartlessness, feeling heartbroken in despair. However Jing Wan looked to her grandmother with a bit of worship. It really was powerfully formidable.

Luo second lady took the injured Jiang Ling Shan away, and when leaving, Jiang Ling Shan was endlessly crying, yet as a result, directly got slapped twice by her mother, scolding her for having a lowly life, not casting herself into a good family, and ending up like this today, it was also her own fault.

Everyone all knew she was scolding for others to hear, but Luo Old Madam was completely aloof. Thus, she had no choice but to drag Jiang Ling Shan away. No matter how unwilling and resentful she was inside, in front of strong power, she still needed to lower her head.

And Jiang Ling Shan was also a bit pitiful. A large portion of her brow bone was bandaged, so the specifics of her injury couldn’t be seen, and the areas that weren’t covered were also swollen. Yet, in the end, there were even two more palm prints on her face.

However, this pitiful person certainly has hateful areas. If not for her having crooked thoughts, would things have gone this far?

Having the people sent off, Luo Old Madam got up, “There are still many guests in the manor, so just go do whatever you should be doing. Today’s matter, you two brothers better properly reflect on for me, both this stupid.”

By the time Jing Wan and Luo Old Madam left, the few remaining were still somewhat absentminded. This was just over with like that?

Luo Jing Bo and Luo Jing Ming mutually glanced at one another. Indeed, today, they’ve both made stupid mistakes. Luo Jing Ming had easily gotten schemed against, and Luo Jing Bo was even stupider. He completely didn’t need to have himself thrown into the matter. Aside from letting Jiang Ling Shan implicate him, towards the original matter, he didn’t have any use at all. However, even if getting called stupid, they still very much admired their grandmother inside, cleanly and swiftly having this matter settled. Originally, they thought that this matter would be very troublesome, and if not handled well, will really let a disgusting person enter the family gates.

T/N: First of all, what do you call your father’s sister if not paternal aunt? I’ve always been very careful and consistent with my use of familial address since english doesn’t give as much information as in chinese, so the wives of her father’s brothers I’ve always just translated as ‘aunt’, and the sisters of her father I refer to as ‘paternal aunt’, I think I’ve mentioned this back in early chapters when I complained about the lack of proper familial addresses in english. And while I’m at it, mother’s sister is ‘maternal aunt’, and mother’s brother’s wife is ‘maternal aunt-in-law’. Attention to detail can really get you far in life.

Secondly, literally the chapter Jiang Ling Shan was introduced, back in chapter 9, I made a FAMILY TREE + CHARACTER LIST, because I knew this would happen, links are all in the menu. They took a couple of hours of my life to make, so please use them if your memory fails you.

  1. All this side/family character talk makes me wish the author worked this into a series. I understand we are seeing many of these characters at their worst but I like finding out the back story. Infants are not born evil, selfish, greedy but raised that way. Thanks for your hard work filling us in.

    1. I wouldn’t just say how they are raised affects them completely, for instance, Luo Old Madam raised this second paternal aunt but she still turned out that way. In the end, it’s still the environment and society that influence people the most. Like my parents tried to raise me into a good person, but I’ve also done a lot of things behind their backs when I was little that they didn’t teach me, tbh till this day, they still don’t know about most of it.

  2. Living in ancient times looks very exhausting, having to be careful everywhere, looking for motives and tricks, especially in large, wealthy and influential families…
But then I remember that it’s all human nature…. (crouch in sad corner growing mushrooms)

    1. A part of me definitely feels really wealthy people in modern times probably have similar problems, like dealing with gold diggers and inheritance fights, or just people will ulterior motives approaching them, but I’m poor so what do I know

  3. Thanks for the chapter! 😘

I remembered Jiang Ling Shan when the author mentioned she was eyeing Sun Yi Jia’s dowry. That left a big impact on me, so I remembered her as well as the fact that she was Luo Jing Bo’s main wife in the last reincarnation. The author did a good job in building her up as a future leech lol

  4. I honestly don’t understand how these people are so delusional. Like y’all, Jingbo turned down a peerlessly beautiful and talented courtesan who threw herself at him because Sun Yijia wouldn’t “let” him. What do you think your Jiang Ling Shan is? Lmao. I love how Luo Old Madam calls the two brothers stupid afterwards, and they’re just like yeah…. Cause ngl sometimes I want to shake MLs or side characters who get schemed against in novels and ask why they are that dumb

    1. In old chinese dramas the MLs are usually always dumbasses that fall for the white lotus rival girl schemes because they are too kind I guess, but always end up hurting the mc. I think shoujo manga also does this sometimes that it’s made me hate the misunderstanding troupe so much. It’s partly why I much prefer MLs like LHY lol

  5. Jiang LS being 4th sis’s frenemy feels like her only memorable stat. Lotsa respect to the author for recycling the character, she’s been dropping by the Luo’s capital residence since chapter 10ish.

I lumped her together with Sun siblings shu siblings/relatives thinking she was a background character, but I guess having a name in this novel really means you deserve a storyline and an ending 😆😂

  6. I thought it should be maternal aunt since it’s Jing Wan’s mother’s sister? Meaning, somebody related to the maternal’s side? Ah well… relations in large family’s always confuse me. 😅

But man… what a bunch of leeches. 😤

    1. Oh my god… I confused Zhang (Jing Wan’s mom) with the Jiang. Gah! Sorry about that. 😭😭😭

    2. Nah, even blood-sucking leeches let go once they’re full. These people are just parasites in human skin.

      1. 😂🤣

And I thought it was only the mother’s side too. But dang. 😑

    1. I kind of understand why Jen gets frustrated sometimes haha…

The previous chapter mentioned what you wanted to know, younger cousin; from second paternal aunt.

Might want to give the story an in-depth reread, its quite interesting picking up the author’s hinted cues. I’m really amazed sometimes with how the author pounds so much ‘potential’ information into a single sentence.

      1. i get their confusion though. Since the paternal family is the Luos and while her father has 3 other brothers i don’t know if any of their wives have the surname Jiang. then there Luo Old madam, her name is Chen ( former fiance no.1’s family) so she’s out. JW’s mom’s family is Zhang so she’s out too. so who is this this Jiang chick and how is she related to them?

maybe if no one can really give the unenlightened masses an explanation of who she is you could just help us by pointing out where we can find out ourselves. we have 400+ chapter parts to get through after all. i read ahead and ! always assumed that this chick was that dumb cousin whose aunt nearly got killed by our local tyrant. (Google-san did not elaborate, it simply said cousin). so i am currently very confused

        1. Yeah, even having thoroughly read this novel as it was released, this jiang chick is… a mystery to me. Too many useless scheming scum that they kinda fade into obscurity when they’re not making a great fool of themselves.

          1. She’s quite hard to forget with her frequent cameos alongside Fourth sis. She’s a cousin, and also the only so-called friend of Luo Jing Ying the author has introduced throughout the novel (poor girl).

As a refresher for those who read the novel ‘throughly’ half asleep, Luo grandpa has seven children total: four boys and three girls. One of the girls is shu born and raised personally by Luo grandma since her concubine mother died early. The author mentioned this shu born daughter was raised practically no different from Luo grandma’s other daughters. As such she’s basically as close as the other two daughter to Luo grandma with the only difference being di and shu born. This shu born married a man surnamed Jiang and gave birth to Jiang Lian Shang. By the way, she was the second to be born amongst the girls and hence ‘second paternal aunt’.

Previous chapters mentioned Jiang Lian Shang long had her eyes on Jing Bo. Her mother, the second paternal aunt, tried to push for a marriage to happen but meeting Zhang Shi (Jing Bo/Jing Wan’s mother) it was like a cat talking to a chicken with no progress to be made.

Hence Jing Wan isn’t surprised for this to be happening right now.

Oh, and the family tree’s great Jen, it does get used – thank you!

        2. I literally have a character list and family tree made but I love how no one likes to use it

          1. just dropping a comment cause I feel your frustration.. I had no clue who liang shang was so I used your character list!

          2. Aww. I use it all the time. Very well made and helpful. I literally have one tab on the family tree and one tab on the text, even though I’m basically marathon reading this, I get confused. So many characters!
